RNA training leads to new career goals for Kindred employee
Jerline Hodge went through the Education Fund's first RNA training back in May. Since then she's decided to upgrade her position and she is taking full advantage of the Education Fund to make that move.

Sam Lee works as an admitting registrar at San Jose Regional  Medical Center, is a husband and father (his son is five) and still manages to  earn good grades in the most challenging nursing  school prerequisite courses: Anatomy, Physiology, and  Microbiology.

Kaiser LVN becomes an RN
Maria Cotty is one of more than 50 LVNs moving into higher-paying positions through an upgrade training program created by the collective bargaining process between Kaiser and SEIU UHW-West.“I’m just so grateful to Kaiser, to the union and to the Education Fund,” said Cotty, a 10-year employee at Kaiser’s Roseville Medical Center. “I have always wanted to better myself."

Children's Hospital cashier becomes a sterile processing technician
"It’s great that Children’s Hospital and the union are working together to provide these kinds of opportunities,” says April Striplin. "It lets people know that you don’t have to settle. You can move up. I’m just so grateful." Before receiving the training, Striplin worked as a food service cashier at Children’s. She’ll make from $3 to $6 more an hour in her new position.

Kaiser LVN gets better access to science prerequisite classes
"I was excited to see that there were opportunities in Fresno," Scott Ogilvie recalls. "I thought 'this is pretty cool. I can get the classes I need without having to wait and have my books, tuition and even my parking permit paid for. It's just a testament to how much Kaiser and the union want us to succeed."

Career Counselor provides needed support
Education Fund Career Counselor's like Daisy Kinyauo help employees develop a plan and take the classes they need to move up the career ladder. "When times got tough, when it seemed like the bidding was never going to come through, Daisy was there to keep me focused and positive," says Alecia Mainor-Quail..

FREE CEU Courses keep employees abreast of latest requirements
"I was pleased to learn about the opportunities available through the Education Fund,” says Jill Wire, 15-year Kaiser employee. "Many members of UHW’s Medical Social Work Chapter are either licensed clinical social workers or they are working toward licensure. Having these classes available for continuing education is a great benefit.”
